Michigan Drone Pilot Suggests 2018 is the Year of the Camera Drone

Hey there and welcome to another episode of Tips & Tech Talk. I am your host Ron, a Michigan drone pilot. Today we pose the question, is 2018 the year of the camera drone? I contend it is. One week from tomorrow was a scheduled event by DGIC the bigger picture. Well that has been postponed.

Never has there been so much speculation about what drone DJI was going to release because never before has DJI received these much competition from several different places. Let’s talk about some of the competition that DJI is facing right now. Three DJI competitors released three different classes of drones in a one week span in June.

Challenger Number One: the Parrot Anafi

This is an answer to DJI’s release of the Mavick Air earlier this year. This is a very similar drone to the Mavick Air, but again, I still think that the Mavick Air probably outranks the Parrot Anafi. But nevertheless, there is competition in that class of drone.

Challenger Number Two: the Evil Autel

This is an answer to the DJI Mavic Pro, and that is leading a lot of speculation up until this June 18 event that the Mavic Pro 2 will come out and in fact crushing the Evil Autel. Whether that happens or not, that still remains to be seen.

Challenger Number Three: the Typhoon H Plus

And the third challenger is the unique Typhoon H Plus which is supposed to challenge the Phantom 4 Pro, with its 1 inch sensor and 20 megapixel camera. As far as the See The Bigger Picture event that was scheduled for July 18th in New York City, that’s now ben postponed, no date has been announced. This means for a little while longer drone fans are going to be left to speculate, what is DJI going to release?

Will it be a Phantom 5 taking over for the DJI Phantom 4 Pro Version 2, which they recently released with very little fanfare? Will it be a Spark 2, maybe a Spark Pro, maybe with the three axis gimbal? Maybe with the ability to control your video a little bit more?

Or, as most suggest, will it be the Maverick Pro 2? DJI has a history of putting their drones on sale right before they’re going to release the next upgrade to that product. So, the Phantom 4 Pro Version 2 just recently was released as an upgrade to the Phantom 4 Pro. However, there has been no change in price on their website, or otherwise.

Conversely, the Maverick Pro has gone down the price several times. And right now, I think you can get the Maverick Pro for $799.00 The Spark has also gone down in price quite a bit, a couple of times. So those two drones, the Mavic Pro and the Spark, have each gone down in price.

That is the main reason that I think that one of those two drones, either the Mavic Pro 2, or the Spark 2, or the Spark Pro, will be the drone that will be released. To see The Bigger Picture event when DJI does reschedule that. What drone do you think DJI is going to release?
